Jul-25-2008 - The Gatekeeper's Name
 Perspective is haaaaaaard.

There are a couple of things in this page that represent departures from the way I'd originally written the comic. When I first came up with the idea that (*ahem*) David could turn invisible, I was thinking of it as an intrinsic ability, like his shapeshifting. The joke would have been that it wasn't invisiblity, just a sort of chameleon effect that was, as you might imagine, highly dependent on viewing angle. When I started actually drawing the comic, however, I found that really didn't work, so the invisibility became a piece of technology. I think this was a pretty good decision - I've got a couple of ideas for other things I could do with it now.

His comment that he doesn't know how it works because he didn't invent it is kind of an homage to The Terminator.

And the Gatekeeper's name. At first I was going to give him a 'real' name, but I abandoned that pretty quickly, for the same reason as we never see his machines or find out what he 'really' looks like (if that even means anything, which I'm not sure it does when discussing a Shapeshifter) - I have no imagination and I doubt I could come up with anything sufficiently cool. So I figured it was less bother to just give him a pseudonym. If you've looked at my Deviantart account, you'll find that having made that decision, I managed to name him pretty quickly - the commentary on my first drawing of him, dated May 20, 2007, refers to him as 'David Ford'. You'll notice there's a lot of stuff in said commentary that's not quite true anymore.

Anyway. In early drafts of the story, the name 'David' was just what he called himself, with no explanation. By the time I was writing comics for Cil, I'd come to the conclusion that he really wasn't supposed to talk to the Earthlings if he could help it, and therefore probably wouldn't have a name for himself... 'David' then became a name the kids gave him because they needed to call him something. And while I was writing this version, that idea collided with 'Emjay's Imaginary Boyfriend' and made me laugh, so here it is.

No, by the way, everybody, I do not know what's up with the RSS feed.
