Feb-08-2008 - The Gatekeeper
I'm not too terribly fond of this page... the first panel has too much of the old 'Get Medieval' thing of putting further away people above closer to people... although the closer to people are Deech, Newt, and Sakura, all of whom are relatively short. And there it is in the second panel, too, although that may be a down shot, or the Gatekeeper might be slouching. Panel four looks frankly crappy, although I can blame that on the general fact that graduated transparency is nearly impossible to draw in pen and ink... and I shouldn't have made the background black in the bottom panel. Also once again, i simply cannot fit eight people across, so this time it's Sakura who has mysteriously disappeared. Newt looks way girly, too.

Um.

Right, now that I'm done ranting bout the art, here's some random boring information about how I draw: the pages are drawn to be printed at 5x8 inches, which happens to be one of the book sizes offered by cafepress, the POD publisher I used for the 'Get Medieval' books. I'm drawing them, however, a third bigger than that so I can get more detail in. I use three sizes of Sakura pens (an 01, an 05, and a 2), plus a sharpie for large areas of black. All the cross-hatching is done by hand. The white lines to divide black from black is done simply by leaving a thin white space. It'd probably be easier to use a white gel pen. I tend to draw each page in strips... I'll pencil, ink, and finish the top row of panes completely before going on to the middle one, and so on.
